Nursing homes offer themselves in many economic climates and settings. And, in most cases are staffed with individuals that are dedicated to the well being of seniors and their families.
The transition can be pleasant though it may be hard to imagine, even if you are moving threshold to threshold, (hospital to nursing home).
Anger can be the order of the day with some residents. While some confide they feel rejected and cast aside when their families and physicians decided the move is best or perhaps the best for all involved.
Such, feeling are understandable and need to be expressed. But, we also must understand the feeling of guilt and helplessness being experience by children and friends during the transition.
It’s no cake walk for the children or the parent during the period of transition.
Get feeling out in the open, talk about the move; discuss how the transition is effecting
everyone, don’t hold back if you are angry about the move, say it! Ask questions until you really understand the dynamics of the decision.
Children tell your parents how you struggled with the decision, if you are emotional about the move, pick the right time to share your emotion with your parent.
Let parents know you did your very best with the resources and knowledge you have.
Both parent and child must show unbreakable trust . . .
Talk to your family about what you will miss most about your former life, many times families can choose communities that will have weekly worship service, hair stylist or your favorite TV programming just let them know what is important to you.
Then ask you family to arrange a time to talk with the staff, about elements of your
daily routine that you carried out before you moved, it may be possible to keep those routines in place.
Power up! Reassure yourself that you are moving to a place where laws, policies and staff will be in place, to care for you around the clock. You will live with a new community of people, giving you another chance to discover yourself and others.
