Litter Box and Litter

There is a wide assortment of styles and materials used for litter boxes.  These include:

• Hooded or open
• Scoop-it-yourself
• High-tech self-sifter

Cat litter is also available in a wide variety of brands and material.  The breeder or previous owner can advise you about which type of litter box and litter they were using and the cat or kitten is use to using.  It is often best to begin with the same type of litter.  Some cats object to changes in litter.  You can change the litter gradually:

• Mix 25% new litter with 75% of the old litter
• Gradually increase the new and decrease the old

A quiet, private location is best for the litter box, and it should be out of reach of toddlers or dogs.

A daily scoop, frequent changes, and periodic scrubbing (weekly) with mild soap and 1:32 bleach-water solution will keep the cat happy and its new home free of waste odors.
