Americas First Ladies

Welcome!

First Lady of the United States is the unofficial title of the hostess of the White House.  Traditionally, First Lady positions are filled by the wife of the President of the United States.  However, several women other than wives of Presidents have served as First Lady.  This occurred when the President was a bachelor or widower, or when the wife of the President was unable to fulfill the duties of the First Lady herself.  In these cases, the First Lady position has been filled by a female relative or friend of the President.

As of this date in 2007, no woman has served as President of the United States.  If this occurs, it is not known what title would be applied to a President's husband, who might serve as the host of the White House.  The current First Lady in 2007 is Laura Bush.
