Adopting Puppies A Puppy Owner's Manual

9 to 12 Months

  • At this time, your puppy should be fairly calm and manages better on his own.
  • He quietly chews his bone or plays with toys when he is suppose to.
  • Puppy should be responding to your commands now immediately.
  • He does not jump on your visitors.
  • He is almost perfect, but not yet.
  • Training is still not over.
  • Remember, puppy really wants to behave and please you.
  • You just have to continue to show puppy what to do that pleases you.
  • Even though the dog wants to please you, he or she is probably also wanting to test you as the leader.
  • Stay in the driver's seat and be sure your puppy always knows you mean what you say.
  • Be consistent with your training.
  • Remain calm.  If you do get angry, try not to let your puppy see the anger or see you lose control
  • Come up with some new adventures to share with your dog
  • Join some obedience classes
  • A training class will help create a well-rounded, polite dog
  • Take your dog along in car trips whenever possible
