Adopting Puppies A Puppy Owner's Manual

6 to 9 Months

At this time, puppy is beginning to go through some major changes.  Puppy is growing into an adult dog.  At this time puppy is contending with:

  • hormones
  • possible rebellion, confusion curiosity
  • puberty

In addition, the breed type will dictate what other changes occur, such as herding, hunting, guarders, pullers.

By this time, your puppy should have learned:

  • the basic commands you wanted to teach
  • not to whine excessively
  • not to try and boss you around
  • no jumping, nipping or leash pulling

Puppy should be on the way to a well behaved dog at this point.  Training is still critical.  Without it, the dog may not outgrow this stage.  Continue all training, regardless of how well puppy is doing at this point.

Some tips now are:

  • Don't repeat yourself with commands, say the command only once, instead of sit, sit, sit, just say "sit."
  • If your dog ignores a correction more than twice, station her quietly away from you for 15 minutes.  Do not station your dog just because you are angry.  Allow time for both you and your dog to cool down, then station.
  • When the environment is over stimulating, such as with additional children, company, etc., station or lead her at your side to maintain control
  • Never station a dog near outlets, or ledges and do not station the dog on a training collar.
  • Keep cool and don't lose your temper with the dog, keep the right attitude, have fun with your dog
