Training Equipment:

  • The Teaching Lead
  • A flexi-leash, the longer the better
  • Chew Toys and Bones
  • A ball or some other fetch toy

The 16 to 24 week old puppy is starting into the Adolescent period.  Some things to remember:

  • When home, you should always know where your puppy is
  • Do not give your puppy complete freedom at this time
  • Keep puppy nearby either on a teaching lead, under observation in an enclosed area, or on the short lead attached to the buckle collar
  • Restrained, the puppy gets attention for good behavior
  • Continue organizing puppy's free time
  • When puppy begins to responde well on her own, attach a short lead and give puppy freedom in the house
  • Do not rush things, do not let puppy go free until ready
  • Continue to use the "Sit" command.  Use this command before you pet her, or put her food down or offer a treat and before others approach to admire puppy.
  • Give the "Sit" command only once, correcting with "No" and a leash tug
  • Remember to provide a structured environment for your puppy
  • Keep in mind your puppy is still very impressionable.  It is advisable to stay away from rivalry games like tug-of-war.  Instead, communicate direction and fun
